Zakynthos Town

The lively city of Zakynthos is situated in the center of the eastern coast of Zakynthos and overlooks one of the most beautiful bays of the island, washed by a turquoise sea.

The old town of Zakynthos preserves several buildings in neoclassical style, large squares and public buildings rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953 which destroyed the ancient urban layout. Today it is a modern and lively town, but there is no lack of evidence of its rich past, first of all the Venetian fortress that dominates the city from the top of a hill.

Previously the city boasted above all an architecture in Venetian style, French and English, the three populations that dominated the island in the various ages, of which fortunately some examples have survived.

Very picturesque the port and particularly beautiful Orthodox churches of the city: worth a visit the church of San Dionisio, dedicated to the patron saint of the island, with magnificent decorations and frescoes.

The shopping and entertainment streets of Zakynthos are located around Solomos Square and near the church of Agios Dionysios.

In Zakynthos there are several interesting museums where you can admire wonderful works of art.

Byzantine Museum

Between a boat trip and a seafood dinner in a small restaurant on the waterfront, find some time to visit the Byzantine Museum in the city of Zakynthos.

Housed inside an elegant building overlooking the main square, it displays a collection of sacred art with works rescued from the island’s churches destroyed by the earthquake. From the upper floors you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

Don’t miss the reproduction of the 16th-century monastery of St. Andrew, with its restored original frescoes.

Not to be missed

• The Solomos Museum houses the archives and personal effects of Dionysios Solomos, the father of modern Greek poetry.
• To immerse yourself in the Anglo-Saxon atmosphere of the island you can visit Villa Romas, a luxurious residence built in the seventeenth century by an English merchant: the original furnishings are still there.
• If you want to walk in the liveliest heart of the city you have to go on the coastal road between Solomos square and the church of Aghios Dionisios where there are restaurants, stores and taverns.
• Another really suggestive point is the Kastro, the ruins of the Venetian castle that rise on the top of a small hill from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the bay.
