Mykonos Town – or Chora–sprawls around the ancient port of Hora among numerous churches and chapels to admire, busy streets to stroll through, and also three small museums to visit.

You can choose to stay in the quiet, flower-filled Kalogera odos or away from the hustle and bustle in the hills of the town, but always keep in mind that during peak season it is sold out.

Places to visit in Mykonos Town

Little Venice

1Little Venice, Μύκονος, Grecia

Little Venice is the most famous neighborhood in Mykonos Town where you will find picturesque houses built flush with the water that resemble those in Venice.

Mykonos is a picturesque town of small white houses climbing the gentle ridge of a hill where labyrinthine alleys and beautiful hidden nooks and crannies follow one another interspersed with small churches and boutiques, all topped by beautiful windmills from the 1500s.

One of the landmarks of Chora is Little Venice, the neighborhood so named because the houses with their balconies are built flush with the water and resemble those of Venice.

Little Venice is located in the center of Mykonos Town and consists of traditional multicolored houses that belonged to wealthy merchants and captains in the 1700s, giving the impression of floating on the Aegean Sea, creating awe in the traveler.

The sunset from this neighborhood is sensational and absolutely not to be missed: the waves are tinged with gold and crash on the waterfront while the sky is colored in shades from yellow to red.

The narrow streets of Little Venice form a labyrinth, originally designed to confuse pirates in case they attacked the city, now enhanced by art galleries and exhibitions.

Enjoy a sunset cocktail on the waterfront and then party all night in the elegant nightclubs and cafes of Little Venice.

Paraportiani Church

2Χώρα, Mikonos 846 00, Grecia

It is located at the end of the harbor in the kastro district. It dates back to the 16th century and is the oldest in Mykonos. The exterior architecture is the most interesting element: the structure is composed on two levels and from elements of at least five other earlier churches. The harmony of forms and the play of chiaroscuro make the building striking.

Folklore Museum

3Κάστρο Μυκονος, Μύκονος 846 00, Grecia

It is near the Paraportiani Church and is open from April to October, free admission. It houses a comprehensive ethnographic collection of period furniture, plate sets, prints, engravings, traditional clothing and art objects. The basement floor is dedicated to Mykonos and the sea: cannons, old photos, model boats, numerous relics, model boats and a life-size ship used during the War of Independence in 1821.

Alefkandra district

4Mitropoleos, Mikonos 846 00, Grecia

Between Little Venice and the famous mills of Mykonos are at least 10 churches including the cathedral, which gives its name to Odos Mitropoleos, and the Panagia Rodariou, the only Catholic church on the island, which holds an important icon. The name Alefkandra derives from the Greek word “alefki,” meaning windmill, as there were many windmills in this area in the past. It is located near the famous Matogiannia district, where there are many high-fashion boutiques, souvenir stores, and upscale restaurants.

Aegean Sea Museum

5Enoplon Dinameon 10, Mikonos 846 00, Grecia

It is located on Odos Enopion Dinameon and is open from April 1 to November 1. It houses a collection of models inspired by the frescoes of Akrotiri, Santorini (1500 B.C.). The entire epos in sailing the Aegean Sea can be seen: from Assyrian dinghies, Egyptian sailing ships, and holkades, the impressive Greek war triremes of the 4th century BC. Also on display are amphorae, nautical shipboard instruments and portraits. The museum also houses a small thematic library at its core.

Lena's House

6Enoplon Dinameon, Mikonos 846 00, Grecia

It is next to the naval museum and is open from April 1 to October 31 with free admission. The 19th-century home belonged to the daughter of a wealthy merchant. In an elegant and cozy atmosphere one can admire beautiful furnishings and personal items.

Archeological Museum

7Μουσείο, Χώρα Μυκόνου, Mikonos 846 00, Grecia

It is located on the harbor road. It houses collections of pottery, Corinthian vases, craters, a 1st-century B.C.E. Rhinia funerary stele, jewelry, gold jewelry, and terracotta figurines.
