It was an ancient fishing village, today Hersonissos (or Chersonissos) is the capital of nightlife in Crete.
A little more than twenty kilometers from Heraklion, the capital of the island, is a favorite destination for young Europeans who want to treat themselves to a vacation full of nightlife or celebrate a special occasion such as graduation or bachelor party.
In the morning you can sleep, in the afternoon you can sunbathe and have fun with jet skis or other water sports, at sunset you can have an aperitif and the night is only music, drinks and pleasant meetings. This is the typical day of young tourists in Hersonissos.
You don’t necessarily have to do the same. This lively resort in eastern Crete is also suitable for couple or family vacations: to these types of travelers Hersonissos can offer its beautiful beaches, many services, a large number of stores and restaurants, but above all modern and comfortable hotels at cheap prices. Not bad is also the presence of many free pools, pools with free access after consumption.
We are still in Greece, so if someone is looking for history and archeology will find it at hand: even near the noisy Hersonissos you can see ancient remains of classical, Byzantine, early Christian and even some prehistoric remains.
The fun for children is guaranteed by safe beaches with gently sloping seabed, tourist trains, aquariums, water parks and the interesting Lychnostatis Open Air Museum1 that reproduces a traditional village.
The beaches of Hersonissos include a wide main beach and a series of small beaches set in small bays; they are all sandy, with some stretch of pebbles or rocks.
In the City Beach2 the depths are low and it is therefore possible to swim and play in safety. Almost all the coast is equipped and the bathing establishments offer numerous services.
The most famous beach of Hersonissos is probably Star Beach3: it is a narrow strip of fine sand with rocks at the ends that is located close to the homonymous tourist village. During the day it is very popular with families, but at night it turns into an open-air disco.
The best beach for families or couples in the surroundings of Hersonissos is Stalis4, a sandy beach kilometers long.

The glamorous clubbing leave it to Mykonos or Santorini: the nightlife of Hersonissos is young, wild and not at all snobbish.
Here no exclusive clubs with dress code and prohibitively expensive entrance tickets: the nightclubs of Hersonissos are mainly discos, pubs, beach bars and cocktail bars designed for mass youth tourism. And this means free entrance, cheap drink prices and a lot, a lot of music of every kind.
The area of movida in Hersonissos is a long street parallel to the beach where most of the nightclubs of the city are concentrated. If Hersonissos is not enough for you, you can go to Malia, the second young destination of Crete (only 7 km away).
Keep in mind that the nightlife in Hersonissos starts very late, usually after one in the morning, so if you go to the disco before that time you will find it deserted.
For a pre-evening you can take advantage of happy hours and other promotions in pubs and cocktail bars; to start even earlier look for beach bars that start playing music from 4:00 pm.
